With my recent diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism came the solution to my illness. After a few days of not feeling well I ended up in my favorite recliner slouched over, unwilling to walk as far the bathroom, and having great difficulty breathing. I had no idea what was wrong with me. I was rushed to the hospital ICU and the doctor immediately diagnosed me with a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs). My family and friends were all very worried. Fortunately I was in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, one of the best medical schools in the country where only a small period of time lapsed between diagnosis and cure. The cure was the immediate removal of the blood clot from my lungs with a new procedure that mimics a vacuum. The blood clot was literally vaccuumed out before it could do any damage. Thanks to the support of my family, friends, and medical team, I feel relieved that I made it and feel much better physically and emotionally. I have a little time to spend here in rehab before going home, but this feels like a gift to me and I’m grateful.
