Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt’s RSVP

Searching for my missing manuscript for the first book I wrote, Dea Ex Machina, I came upon two responses to my wedding reception to Roger Pratt in 1962 at The Cosmopolitan Club in NYC. One letter in particular was in an off white envelope with a rather large rubber stamp signature by Anna Eleanor Roosevelt and the word “Free”. No postage just that rubber stamp. One of the perks of being First Lady of the United States is that you get free postage for life. Instead of using a postage stamp, Mrs Roosevelt instead would rubber stamp the envelope with her name.

The second letter was from Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s son John Roosevelt who was also was invited to the wedding reception and sent my parents an RSVP accepting the invitation.

To me knowing they’d both be at my wedding reception was exciting, even more exciting was the presence of the United Nation’s band who had been procured by Mrs. Roosevelt for the music that night! This was a very memorable experience.

What stays in my memory the most about this event was my Uncle Arthur who probably had a few drinks too many proclaiming to his table, “I’d take Jews any day!”
