Fashion makes a statement. The first time I met Mrs Roosevelt I was walking up to the second floor of her house and Eleanor stood at the top of the stairs to greet Mickey and me. I saw Eleanor from her feet first as I climbed the stairs. She wore Gilly-tied shoes and a skirt and blouse that looked like one big blur of beige and dark brown. The kind of thing I’d expect to see on a woman of her age. I wasn’t expected a fashion plate and I wasn’t disappointed.
As for myself I came from a world of fashion starting with my mother who always wore stylish clothing. She planned her outfits daily and dressed beautifully. She accessorized smartly and was usually the only woman wearing matching gloves and hats with outfits
My fashion icons were Natalie Wood, Elizabeth Taylor, and soon to be First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. My clothing was always well fitted and appropriate for a young lady my age. The summers were spent reading and wearing faux one piece leopard skin bathing suits. and evening dress consisted of cocktail dresses that were glamorous and usually black with a string of pearls.
